About TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal or simply TAP Portugal is Portugal's flag carrier. It is headquartered at Lisbon Portela Airport. The airline was established in 1945. It began flying operations in 1946, as Transportes Aereos Portugueses. The airline now operates more than 2,000 flights per week to 88 destinations in 38 different countries. A subsidiary airline operates short-haul European, North African and European services under the TAP Express brand.

TAP has codeshare agreements in place with many carriers, including Aegean Airlines and Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand and Cabo Verde Airlines.

Economy Class

One of two cabin types that the airline offers is Economy Class. There are several fares available for Economy Class passengers. These fares offer additional benefits such as free baggage allowance, no cancellation fees and the ability to select seats in advance. The Economy experience is the same regardless of the fare.

Business Class

TAP Portugal's Business Class (also known as Executive Class) is the most exclusive cabin class. It offers more comfort, amenities, and higher standards of service than Economy Class.

TAP Portugal passengers can now check in online for their flights. This service is available up to 36 hours before departure and can be done through the TAP Portugal website.

Airport Check In

Passengers who haven't checked in online need to check in at the airport. Depending on where you are departing from, the opening and closing times of airport check in time may vary.

Baggage policy and Fees

Carry-on Baggage

TAP Air Portugal hand luggage must be no larger than 115cm when combined with the dimensions.

Economy Class passengers are allowed to bring one bag (8kg) with them when they fly. Economy Class passengers have one personal item per person, which can not exceed 2kg.

Executive Class passengers have 2 pieces of carry-on luggage that can be carried onboard, with a maximum weight limit of 8 kg. Executive Class passengers have the option to bring their personal items, which cannot exceed 2 kg.

The following are exceptions to these rules:

  • Flying economy class to Venezuela or Brazil, passengers can bring up to 10kg of luggage.
  • Executive Class passengers cannot exceed 8kg in weight and have to be no larger than 55 x 40x 20 cm when flying from or to the USA.

Checked Baggage

Checked baggage allowance for passengers is dependent on the flight route and purchased fare.

For Executive Dining:

  • Two items up to 32 kg are allowed on flights between Europe or North Africa.
  • Intercontinental flights to/from Venezuela - 3 items maximum 32kg

For the Executive Fare

  • 2 items max 32kg are required for each route.

For the Plus Fares:

  • Portugal flights - 2 items maximum 23kg
  • Flying between Europe and North Africa: 1 item up 32kg
  • Intercontinental flights to/from Venezuela - 3 items maximum 23kg

Pet policy

Only pets (cats and dogs) can be brought in the cabin. The container should be placed under the seat. It is 40x33x17cm. All pets must be kept in the hold, with the exception of assistance canines.

You must note that if you're traveling with your pet on a flight that has a layover, these rules may apply:

  • Depending upon the itinerary and the total weight of the animal (animal plus transport bag), it may be necessary for the animal to fly part the route in the cabin while the other part is in the hold. This is especially true for flights between America and Europe (for instance, New York – Lisbon – Madrid).
  • When the conditions for transporting the animal are different along the entire route (e.g. if one portion of the trip is in the basement and another in the cabin), the 3 hours of intermediate scale should be guaranteed to ensure the integrity of every process and diligence.
  • If the animal moves from the cabin to the hold along the second route, the transport box must be provided at the point where it originated.

For any fare, you can ask for a refund. Refund penalties may be applicable depending on the purchase fare. These will be deducted off the ticket amount.

There may be different refund rules depending on the market in which the ticket was issued.

No refund fees will be charged if the refund request is made via fly TAP. No refund fee will be charged for requests made via fly TAP's Contact Center and sales desk.

*For tickets issued in another currency, the amount of the ticket will be converted according the current exchange rate.

You can get a voucher with a 10% Bonus;

You must pay the original amount (no bonus).

Refunds within 24 Hours

Refunds will not be granted regardless of what fare was purchased.

Refunds will be processed in vouchers deducting any applicable fees.

These vouchers can't be redeemed for cash and must be used within one year after the purchase of TAP Tickets.

If the request for a refund is received within 24 hours after booking confirmation, but before the flight departs (no-show), then the same fare rules apply.
