About Northern Thunderbird Airways

NT Air was created in 1971 by the merger of two airlines from northern British Columbia: Thunderbird Airlines and Northern Mountain Airlines.Northern Mountain Airlines was established in Fort St. James, Canada, in 1959. They were the largest airline in British Columbia by 1971. Northern Mountain was a diverse fleet that included Cessnas and DHC-2 Beavers as well as Beech 18s and Grumman Goose helicopters. They served Northern Canada, including Alberta, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. Northern Mountain, which had an airplane division that was spun off to merge with Thunderbird in 1971 became a helicopter-only operation through 2000.
