About Gulf Air
Gulf Air, the flag carrier Bahrain is based in Muharraq and has its main hub at Bahrain International Airport. The airline has flights to more than 50 destinations in over 30 countries throughout Africa, Asia and Europe.
This airline is one the most established in the Middle East. Its history dates back to the 1940s and included an air taxi service between Doha, Qatar, and Dhahran. The company that registered this air taxi service, Gulf Aviation Company Limited in 1950, was owned by major stakeholders such as British Overseas Airways Corporation. Oman, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Qatar each received a 25% stake in Gulf Aviation in 1974. It was quickly rebranded as Gulf Air. However, Qatar announced in 2002 that it would withdraw from Gulf Air and instead focus on its flag carrier Qatar Airways. Abu Dhabi also did the same thing in 2005. They announced their focus on Etihad Airways. Oman pulled out in 2007 leaving Bahrain as the sole owner.
