About

Sacramento is the capital and largest city in California. Sacramento, at the confluence the Sacramento and American Rivers in Northern California’s Sacramento Valley, is the capital city of California. It also serves as the seat and largest city of Sacramento County. It houses the California State Capitol Museum.

Sacramento is also the cultural, economic, and political heart of the Greater Sacramento Area. The fourth-largest metropolitan region in California, it was the 2020 Census.

Before the arrivals of the Spanish the area was inhabited previously by the Nisenan and Maidu as well as other native peoples from California. Gabriel Moraga, a Spanish cavalryman and cartographer, named the Rio del Santisimo Sacramento in 1808. It was named after the Blessed Sacrament in the Catholic Church. Juan Bautista Alvarado was the Mexican governor of Alta California in 1839. He gave the responsibility of colonizing Sacramento Valley over to John Augustus Sutter (a Swiss-born Mexican citizen). In 1808, Gabriel Moraga, a Spanish cavalryman, surveyed and named the Rio del Santisimo Sacramento (Sacramento river) after the Blessed Sacrament. The waterfront, which Sutter had developed, was eventually incorporated into the City of Sacramento in 1850.
