About Eastern Australia Airlines

In 1949, the airline was founded and began operations. It was originally known as Tamworth and later became Tamair. In 1986, the name was changed to Eastern Australia Airlines. Australian Airlines bought 26% of Eastern Australian Airlines from East-West Airlines and made the airline a wholly-owned subsidiary in 1991. Qantas bought Australian Airlines in 1992.

Qantas' Mildura-based subsidiary Southern Australia Airlines was merged with Eastern in 2002. The resulting operation used the Eastern name.

It was announced in August 2008 that Eastern Australia would soon begin operating 72-seat Bombardier Dash 8Q400 aircraft on services from regional centres in New South Wales. These services will be supplemented by smaller 50-seat Dash 8s.

Alan Joyce, chief executive of Qantas Group, announced in June 2015 that Eastern Australia would offer regional services to New Zealand using Bombardier Dash 8 turboprops.

Garath Evans, CEO of Jetstar, announced in September 2019 that he wanted to end regional flying in New Zealand. In October 2019, a confirmation was issued. Jetstar stated that the reasons for withdrawing were soft demand, higher fuel prices and loss making operations. The five Bombardier Dash 8 Bombardier aircraft branded Jetstar were returned to Australia following the withdrawal.
