American Airlines Flight Attendant Requirements

 

High school diploma required or equivalent GED.

• Two years of customer service experience or college education preferred
• You must be able communicate in English and can make announcements, give urgent orders, and communicate with others.
• You must be at least 20 years old
• You must have a valid passport from the United States or a foreign country with applicable VISAs
• You must have the legal right of travel to/from all US and Canadian countries served by American Airlines
• All phases of training or employment must be covered by travel documents.
• You must have legal permission to work in the United States
• You are able to attend 6 1/2 weeks of training in Dallas/Fort Worth and, if you are employed, to move to the city where you have been assigned.
• Reserve duty - Ability to report to duty at your base. Reserve duty can continue for unspecified years.

American Airlines flight attendants do not have to be 21 years old in order to work as they are allowed to, unlike legacy carriers. An airline that has established interstate routes in the United States before 1978's Airline Deregulation Act is a legacy carrier. They are not considered a new airline.

This will begin the application process. You can also join their talent network using your social profile. Additionally, you will be receiving job alerts.

 

After you have created an American Airlines account, you can upload your resume/cover letter. There is also a section that allows you to add and upload references. Although not all airlines require a cover letters, it is a good place to address any gaps in employment and a professional way of introducing yourself.

You will need to complete multiple sections about your education, work history, and certifications. Do not let the application fool your mind; you must be willing to relocate as a flight attendant candidate.

 

American Airlines Flight Attendant Interview Process

 

After you've submitted the application, you can expect to be waited upon. You don't want to hear bad news. Wait if you don't receive an email from American Airlines confirming that they have declined to process your application. VI or Interview American Airlines flight attendant candidates can expect a group interview. This interview is unlike many other pre-recorded flight attendant interviews. American Airlines instead uses Webex for the virtual group interview.

F2F or Face-to-Face Interview – American Airlines will fly you to the F2F interview at Fort Worth's training facility. American Airlines provides the flight and can provide you with a seat for the interview.

Initial Training- Six weeks of flight attendant training will teach you everything you need to be an American Airlines flight attendant. Although training is not paid for, food and lodging will be provided.

Earn Your Flight Attendant Wings After completing your flight attendant training successfully, you can earn your wings and become an American Airlines flight attendant. Yay.

What is the average salary of a flight attendant at American Airlines?

 

American Airlines flight attendants currently are in negotiations for a new contract. However, the hourly rate flight attendants currently receive is:

First Year - $30.35

Second Year - $32.18

$55.16 for 5th Year

6th Year - $45.48

7th Year - $49.76

8th Year - $51.35

9th Year - $52.77

$104.75 for the 10th year

11th Year - $56.25

Reserve guarantee for flight attendants is 75 hours. American Airlines flight attendants can also get holiday pay on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. If their assignment involves any of these holidays, they will receive $75 extra.

 

Flight Attendant Duties

American Airlines Flight Attendants are responsible for passenger safety. Other duties include the pre-flight preparation of any required emergency equipment and announcements for boarding/inflight and disembarking. Additional duties include handling medical emergencies, food and beverage service requests, and customer needs.

American Airlines flight attendants must be at least 19 years of age. All applicants who are less than 19 years of age on the date they apply will be rejected.

 

Education/Work Experience

American Airlines flight attendants need to have a minimum High School diploma or GED and at least two years of post-high education, public contact experience, or flight attendant training like The Travel Academy. Experience in customer service is preferable.

Citizenship
The flight attendant must be either a citizen of the United States or legally authorized to work in America.

American Airlines flight attendants will need to relocate to one of the four flight attendant bases. This is done at your expense. These bases are in Chicago, IL, Dallas/Fort Worth, TX, Los Angeles, CA, Miami, FL, Boston, MA, New York City, NY, San Francisco, CA, Los Angeles, CA, Washington, DC.

The ability to lift a heavy suitcase into an overhead bin is a requirement for flight attendants. You must be able to lift and push heavy objects and operate emergency equipment.

 

English Speaking

American Airlines flight attendants must be able to speak and write English fluently. The English language is required for flight attendants to be able speak, write, read, and understand the English language. International flight attendants will need to have additional language requirements depending on their destination country.

 

American Airlines Flight Attendant Training

All American Airlines flight attendants must have a certificate of proficiency. Once you have obtained the certificate and passed a six-month probation period, job offers will not be permanent. American Airlines Flight Attendants must attend a 6-week unpaid training program. New hires must have sufficient cash to cover their expenses for the duration of this program. American Airlines Training and Conference Center in Dallas/Fort Worth is where certification takes place.

Transfers

American Airlines flight attendants are eligible after successfully completing a 6-month probationary. Flight attendants can request transfer to another American Airlines station after the 6-month probationary period. American Airlines Flight Attendants may request transfer based upon their need. They are also evaluated on years of service. The more service years, the higher they are ranked.
