United offers WiFi on many of its flights. United has four internet providers that it contracts with. The coverage and availability of your plane will depend on which one you choose.

Additionally, I have been on many flights where the internet has stopped working. Backup entertainment is a must, just in case.

Four WiFi Providers

These planes and regions are important.

Gogo - Read on for a price trick on how to save money on your United flight if Gogo is your provider. This service is available on most regional aircraft in the United States and Canada.

Panasonic - This provides near-global coverage on many narrow-body as well as wide-body aircraft.

Thales - This service provider covers the entire continental United States. It is available on some 737s as well as 757-300s.

ViaSat - This service covers North America and the Caribbean as well as most of Europe. The service is available on A319s and B737-900s as well as B737-MAX9s and B757-220s. Alaska and Hawaii offer very limited service, if at all.

Most people will find the process seamless. It doesn't really matter what service provider you use. These are the only exceptions. It deals with ways to save on your trip.

How to save money WiFi

Monthly/Annual Subscribers - This is especially useful if you're a frequent traveller.
United Card Perks If you have a United Explorer Card (or a United Club Card), you can get a 25% inflight credit.
American Express – If United is your choice of airline with AMEX you will be reimbursed for certain incidental expenses in-flight, including WiFi.
GoGo You can check your flight status if you're within 48 hours. GoGo, the internet operator for United Airlines, allows you to bypass the United inflight purchase and sign up before you depart.
You can redeem your MileagePlus points - Although it is not usually a great deal, you can still purchase WiFi with your points. They are usually very expensive, but it may be worth it if you don’t intend to use them on an upcoming flight.

United WiFi Plans and Costs

You might not fly often, so it's best to opt for the "per-flight", United options.

A single flight costs $10 for internet access. MileagePlus members pay $8 for internet access.

You'll be able to fly more often if you choose a monthly or an annual plan.

How to get free Internet WIFI when you fly United Airlines

This issue is part of the Bug bounty program. I'll just copy it here.

Spirit cancelled my flight twice last September (2021), as I was traveling from New York City, to Las Vegas for DEFCON 29. They were able to get me on a United Airlines flight.

Although the flight was equipped with WiFi, it cost around 14.99 USD for an hour. I can't recall. Here's how I got online for free.

The ‘system' will need to verify your credit card details and process payment to enable you to pay for WIFI service. This means that this website uses my browser to send data for their payment processing blabla. That's the key. I thought it might be possible for that gate to remain open.

Step 1: Browse for your credit card information and then enter it.

Step 2: Intercept the request using BURP

We are now ready to intercept any request to send to the internet for our credit card information.

This is the POST request that opens the door!

This is the proof I needed in order to be certain that this would work. After I sent the POST request, I was able to ping Google's DNS in a matter of seconds.

The exploit is obvious. Repeat the request several times to enjoy Internet in the air. It is the first time that I have Internet access while flying.

Now we must set up Burp’s Intercept

Let's do it 10,000 times.

To make sure that we only request one thread for each request, create a resource pool.

We now have free access with some glitches, but it should work fine. I was working on details for the Workshop (Bug bounty hunting). I was due to teach at Defcon 29 days later.
