Baggage Rules & Regulations

United Airlines passengers can carry one personal item and one handbag on board for no additional cost. Personal items can include purses, backpacks, and briefcases.

Carryon luggage:

45 linear inches (22x14x9 in) can be stuffed under the seat, in front of you or in the overhead bins.

Checked Baggage:

You can only carry one standard bag. Maximum dimensions for checked-in baggage 157 centimetres or 62 inches.

Excess Baggage:

Additional baggage fees range from $150 to $200 USD per third item.

Overweight Baggage:

Bags weighing more than 46 kg or 100 lbs will be subject to a charge
The excess weight can vary from $200 to $400.

Oversize Baggage:

Bags measuring between 63 and 115 inches in length will be charged.
$200.00 USD.

United Airlines Carryon Baggage

One full-sized carry-on bag 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 cm x 35cm x 56cm) plus one personal item 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25cm x 43cm). Your personal item is the only thing you can bring on board a Basic Economy ticket.

You can only bring one personal item for Basic Economy travelers unless you are a Premier (r) member or primary card member with a qualifying MileagePlus card. You will need to check your bag and pay the applicable fee if you exceed that limit. $25 Gate handling charges are the same as United baggage fees.

What baggage fees do United Airlines charge?

United Airlines doesn't provide an easy-to read baggage fees table, but they recommend that all passengers use their complimentary baggage calculator tool in order to determine the baggage fees.

If you fly within North America with an Economy class fare, and you order your checked baggage online less than 24 hours before departure, the cost for your first and second bags will be USD 30 and USD 40, respectively. The airport charges an additional USD 5 for each bag. This means that you'll have to pay USD 35-45 for your first and second bags. The second bag is USD 55 if you are traveling between the USA and Mexico.

United Airlines Military Baggage Policy

What is the United Airlines baggage allowance?

According to United Airlines' military baggage policy, active-duty U.S. military personnel as well as their dependents have the right to a free luggage allowance of:

Official business 5 Free checked bags (70lb/32kg and 254cm/100inches).
Personal travel3 free checked bags (70lb/32kg 157cm/62inches).

Dependents traveling on the same booking can share the same baggage allowance, unless the military personnel travels ahead on official orders. Dependents traveling on personal business will be charged the standard baggage allowance and applicable fees depending on their fare.

Creams, Liquids and Aerosols

The following are some tips for liquids, creams and aerosols that you should keep in mind when traveling with powders, liquids, or creams.

To avoid any problems with customs when you leave the United States, please ensure that your toiletries contain no more than 3.4 ounces.
Hand sanitizers of up to 12 ounces can be carried in carry-on bags. However, they will need to go through additional screening (and take more time).
Toiletries should be packaged in transparent, sealable quart-sized bags
In most cases, toiletries and beverages bought after security checks at the airport will be allowed onboard.
Baby foods, juice, milk, or medications exceeding 3.4 ounces are allowed, but must be declared at checkpoint to TSA.
