United Airlines Premium Economy
You are looking for a better experience on United Airlines flights but don't want to spend the extra money for first class. Premium Plus is the United premium economy service. It offers larger seats, complimentary alcohol, and two free checked bags on selected long-haul international flights as well as some domestic routes.
Fly premium economy with United: What can you expect?
What is premium Economy and what do they offer?
Although your United Premium Plus experience will vary depending on where you are located (the class of service is only available on certain long-haul transcontinental, premium transcontinental and Hawaii routes), there's still some things you can rely on.
- Bag allowance. Flying on United Premium Plus, you get two checked bags and reserved overhead bin space to store your carry-on. On domestic flights, regular economy seats offer no free checked bags and on international flights only one.
- Premier Access. Premier Access is also available to Premium Plus customers. This includes dedicated airport check in lines, security lanes at selected airports, priority boarding, and priority boarding.
- Seats. Premium Plus seats can be up to 19 inches wide. They also have a 38-inch seat pitch. This gives you up to seven inches more legroom than standard economy or Economy Plus seats. The seats also recline six inches so you can spread out and feel more comfortable. Premium Plus seats are located closer to the front of a plane, so it is easier to get to your seat.
- Lounges. Premium Plus tickets include access to discounted United Club passes for booking certain long-haul international flights. This allows you to relax before, during, and after your long-haul flight.
- Entertainment. You can bring your own technology to entertain yourself. Premium Plus seatback screens are up to 13 inches, compared to the standard nine inches. On select international long-haul flights, you'll get premium noise-reducing headphones as well as a Saks Fifth Avenue blanket or pillow.
- Beverages and food. Premium Plus offers no alcohol. Premium Plus offers upgraded dining options for select long-haul international routes. The airline also offers complimentary hot entrees, fruits, and desserts on its premium transcontinental routes. You might find chicken katsu, portobello mushrooms and caramelized onions ravioli on the menu.
How to book United's Premium Plus tickets
It is not as simple or easy to find Premium Plus tickets as it is to find first class tickets or business tickets. Start at United.com, and enter your travel dates.
Select "Premium Economy" to see the cabin class. If you wish to book an award flight, select "Book with Miles" and then click "Find flights".
Look under the Premium Economy column to check if there are any Premium Plus seats available. A ticket labelled "Mixed" might appear on your ticket.
Certain flights with connections might not offer Premium Plus seating for all segments. To see the type of premium economy seat offered, it is a good idea that you examine the ticket more closely. You can click on "Details", and each flight segment will be listed with the available seat types.
Once you have selected your flight, you will be able select your seat selection as you proceed with the booking process.
United Economy Plus vs. Premium Plus
United offers three types of tickets for its economy cabin: basic economic (the least restrictive), standard economy, and premium economy (Premium plus). What is United's Economy Plus and what's the difference in Economy Plus and Premium Plus?
Premium Plus is United’s premium economy fare. It comes with all the perks listed above. Economy Plus can be purchased either after or during a booking for a standard economy ticket. You can only purchase an Economy Plus seat if you have a basic economy ticket.
Here are the benefits of Economy Plus over economy seats
- You can either make a one-time purchase for each flight or subscribe for a year.
- The seats are located near the front of a plane.
- Larger seats offer more legroom.
What is the difference between United economy and premium economy?
The benefits of Premier Access and enhanced dining that come with premium economies are not available to the United standard economy. Instead, they offer benefits such as:
- You can also bring a full-sized carry-on.
- You have the option to buy your preferred seating.
- Select international flights include complimentary snacks and beverages.
- Economy Plus and Premium Plus have less legroom.
There are many ways to get great value
How to make the most of your United Premium Plus award booking
Book with miles
Book with miles to save money and get more value is a great way of getting the most out of your points. A search for flights between LAX and London revealed that an economy ticket costs $2,288 (or 30,000 miles) for a refundable fare. This is compared to 7.6 cents per-mile. Premium Plus tickets cost $2,714 (56,600 miles) and are valued at 4.8 cents per-mile.
Both tickets are great for miles because rates United miles at just 1.2 cents per miles. Tickets can be very expensive so it is important to calculate the cost of your tickets before you make a booking.
Partner airlines partner airlines: Book international travel
United is a member in good standing of Star Alliance and you may be able find great deals on award flights with partner airlines. Avianca Life Miles (Air Canada Aeroplan) and Singapore Airlines Kris Flyer among the most well-known programs are Avianca Life Miles .
Lounge pass discounts available
A discounted lounge pass can be a great option for long-haul international flights that include multiple stops. To ensure access, you can buy a pass at the time of booking.
To save miles, travel off-peak
United does not publish a set awards chart. Mileage requirements for award flights depend on many factors including demand. You may be able to get a better deal if you book during off-peak seasons and times.
Final thoughts on United Premium Economy
United Airlines Premium Plus is somewhere in between regular economy and business class. This class offers more space, complimentary alcohol, upgraded meals, and free checked baggage, but it may be more expensive if you book with miles.
It can also be difficult to find flights offering this type of service. If Premium Plus is offered, it's worth looking to see if there are any good deals on long flights.
