United Airlines Economy
A United Basic Economy fare can save you between $40-60 per round-trip flight, but you won't be able to check a bag. You will not be able to check in online for a Basic Economy ticket, but you will earn significantly fewer base miles and zero premier qualifying points. You should only bring a personal item if you are flying Basic Economy.
I was excited when United announced their Basic Economy fares on domestic flights. Although the fare does not include a choice in seat selection and limits passengers to one personal item (and no carry-ons), I was confident that I could handle it for short solo trips.
It was an option for me to take it on a solo weekend trip to Chicago. I chose it. I normally pack for weekend getaways with a small daypack and would not be traveling with my partner so why not?
But I realized that the savings were not worth it when it was time to fly on my Basic Economy ticket. This is what it was like flying United Basic Economy. And why it's something I won't do again.
What is the Basic Economy?
United's Basic Economy tickets are less expensive but have fewer amenities. You can also choose to purchase them ala carte. Basic Economy is for price-sensitive flyers who are willing to sacrifice some comfort in order to save a few bucks.
Basic Economy is a way to get the budget airline experience like Spirit or Frontier but on a major carrier.
These are the "amenities", which you won't be able to live without.
- Full-sized carry-on bags
- Selection of complimentary seats
- Family and group seating
- Certain Premier and MileagePlus member benefits
- Boarding before the last group
Let's see how this compares to the Economy fares you are probably familiar with.
United Basic Economy vs. Economic
United developed the Basic Economy fare in part to compete with budget airlines like Spirit Air and Southwest on domestic routes. United's Basic Economy fare, just like those of budget airlines, is very basic. It is their "most restricted" fare.
There are some differences between regular economy passengers and business class passengers. You can still sit in the same area of the plane as regular economy passengers, but you will receive the same service. You can't change, upgrade, change or change seats. You also cannot change your flight. Premier qualifying miles are not available. Additionally, you are limited to one item per person for your travels. Additionally, you'll receive fewer base mile (more details on that later), and will board last.
Is the Basic Economy Worth it?
You will save around $20-30 each leg by choosing the Basic Economy fare instead of the regular economy fare.
The Basic Economy fare from San Francisco to Los Angeles will save you $60 for a roundtrip ticket. You'd save only $40 on some longer flights -- less than the cost of a bag checked both ways ($25 one-way; $50 roundtrip). Sometimes it is worth it financially, and sometimes it is not.
But, United probably doesn't want you to pick the Basic Economy fare. It is there to make the economy more attractive and worthwhile. This means happier passengers.
Is a combined Basic Economy equal to the Basic Economy?
No! No. United Airlines offers many fare options. The United Basic Economy ticket has fewer benefits than the standard economy fare.
Is it possible to bring a carry-on for United Basic Economy?
Trans-Atlantic flights in Basic Economy are limited to one personal item. Basic Economy passengers who have a full-sized bag will need to check their bags and pay the $25 gate handling fee.
What does Basic Economy for United Airlines mean?
Customers who are more price sensitive were the target market for Basic Economy. Basic Economy fares offer the majority of the same amenities and services as standard economy fares. This includes food and beverages and in-flight entertainment.
How can I choose a seat in the United Basic Economy?
Except for Basic Economy tickets, you can choose your seat and change your seat assignment for any ticket class. If you have a Basic Economy ticket, you can buy a seat assignment at check-in.
Does United charge for carry-on bags?
United Airlines (UA), allows passengers to bring one bag (carry-on) and one personal item (purse or briefcase, laptop bag, etc.) free of charge. Carry-on luggage must be no larger than 45 inches (22x14x9) or 115 cm (56x36x23).
Should a backpack be considered a carry-on item?
A carry-on bag can be any piece of luggage you bring along to an airplane. One piece of carry-on luggage (also known as hand baggage) is allowed by most airlines. It can be placed in an overhead bin along with one personal item (a small purse, computer bag or diaper bag).
Is it possible to bring a backpack with me and a bag for United Airlines?

What is the cost of choosing seats in the United Basic Economy (UBE)?

What is the difference between the United Basic Economy (Baker Economy) and the Basic Economy (Hyperbolic Economy)?
Although Basic Economy provides the same level in-flight service and amenities as standard economy, it has certain restrictions regarding seating, carry-on baggage, MileagePlus benefits, including premier members benefits, and other aspects.
