You can bring your personal items and a bag with you on United Airlines flights. Make sure to read the restrictions and rules beforehand so you are able to plan accordingly.

Airports can be a nightmare for travelers. There are long check-in lines, longer security lines (if not having TSA precheck), and tiny economy seats.

Today, we will discuss how to avoid these obstacles when you fly United with a personal item and a carry-on.

United Carry-on and Personal Items Requirements

United requires that both personal and carry-on bags meet certain standards. Each bag may be brought on United flights (except Basic Economy for non-transatlantic flights). However, the requirements for each item are different.

Carry-on Dimensions

For United flights, carry-on bags cannot exceed 9x14x22 inches (22x35x56 cm). These dimensions do not include wheels or handles.

If your carry-on bag is not within the required dimensions, United may ask you to check it and pay the standard baggage fee.

Carry-ons are not required to be at least a certain weight to avoid paying an additional fee, unlike checked baggage.

Dimensions of Personal Items

Personal items should fit under your seat. You can use your laptop bag and backpacks as common items. These bags cannot be larger than 9x10x17 inches (22x25x43 cm).

Personal items are not required to be at least 20 lbs.

Additional Items

To qualify, you must use your card to purchase your ticket(s).

If the instrument is in a hard case, space is available under the seat or in the overhead compartment, it is allowed to travel onboard.

You can bring any musical instruments with you. This will count towards your carry-on allowance.

What items are allowed in your carry-on bag?

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulates what items can be carried in carry-on luggage. TSA allows liquids and gels to be carried in carry-on bags provided that they do not exceed 3.4 ounces (100ml).

United Express Flights

Regional airlines that operate United Express flights use smaller aircraft than the mainline airline. The overhead compartments on United Express aircraft have less space than those on its mainline aircraft. These overhead bins are often too small to accommodate larger bags or roller bags.

You may have to check your carry-on bag before you board. The bags that have been checked at the gate will not go to baggage claim when you exit the airport. They will instead be brought to you outside of the aircraft, sometimes in the jet bridge.

You should remove any personal vaporizers or e-cigarettes that you have and keep them in your bag if you are required to check your carry-on.

United introduced Basic Economy fares in order to compete with low-cost carriers like Spirit Airlines or Frontier Airlines.

You can choose to pay more for an economy ticket with additional benefits. You can't bring your carry-on bag if you keep your Basic Economy ticket (unless you are flying on a transatlantic or transpacific route).

However, you will not be able to bring any personal items.

If you bring a carry-on, and you are in Basic Economy, you will need to check your bag and pay any applicable fees.

Avoid Basic Economy Carry on Fees

There are two ways to make sure you have a full-sized bag for your Basic Economy ticket. The first is simple, but the second is more time-consuming and costly.

If you are travelling with the same reservation, and space allows, the standard carry-on bag benefits also applies to travel companions.

A second way to avoid paying a fee is to be an elite member of United and Star Alliance. You can bring a standard carryon bag if you have MileagePlus Premier Silver or Premier Gold, Premier Platinum or Premier 1K.

Status requires high spending. Business travelers who travel for work that pays for their travel are most likely to be eligible for this status.
