Frontier Airlines appears to be closing its Huntsville market. This is in addition to the state of Alabama, where it used flights from Birmingham and Mobile.

Huntsville International Airport spokeswoman said that Frontier, which operated flights from Orlando to Denver, ended its service in April. Its service to Orlando is expected to cease Oct. 3. These flights are considered seasonal and therefore terminated in the non-peak travel season.

The April suspension of the Orlando route did not coincide with non-peak season travel. In the past, Denver flights from Huntsville were suspended in winter.

Frontier will be handling questions about Frontier's plans for Huntsville. The airport spokeswoman did not respond to a request for more information. Monday's request for comment was not answered by the airline.

The deterioration of Frontier's status in Huntsville may be a reflection of the unstable airline industry that was ravaged by the rapid decline in passenger traffic caused by the COVID pandemic. Frontier used to operate flights out of Huntsville, Birmingham, and Mobile before the pandemic. Frontier currently only offers service to Huntsville in Alabama.

Frontier, however, announced that it would Mobile weeks before the pandemic began. Then Frontier reversed course and continued to operate flights to Orlando. The reversal was temporary and Frontier is no longer operating in Mobile.

Frontier failed to merge with Spirit Airlines last month, a low-cost carrier. Spirit announced plans to merge with JetBlue.

In 2018, Frontier's arrival in Huntsville International was a highly-anticipated event. Frontier offered a $39 introductory rate for one-way flights from Orlando to Denver. Huntsville officials also celebrated the arrival of a low-fare airline at an airport that is well-known for its high fares.

Two low-fare carriers will be available at the airport if Frontier leaves Huntsville's market: Silver Airways and Breeze Airways.
