American Airlines Route Map
American connecting hub routes maps, 1999
American Airlines connecting route maps for Boston O'Hare and Dallas/Fort Worth. New York JFK, Los Angeles, Miami (top), New York JFK. LaGuardia and San Jose (California), San Juan, and Vancouver (bottom).
These maps, which are actually diagrams, are quite different from the standard geographical destination maps at the time. These diagrams are simple, but they provide lots of information. For example, where American actually flies from any of its connecting hubs.
American's biggest hubs are Chicago O'Hare and Dallas/Fort Worth, while San Jose and Los Angeles were buoyed by Reno Air's August 1999 acquisition. Vancouver was the hub of One world codeshare partner Canadian Airlines.
American owned 700 aircraft, including 35 A300s and 72 727-200s. Flight Fleets Amaze shows that the Reno Air merger in November 1999 gave it 5 MD-90s.
American Airlines is the largest airline in the world, according to its fleet size, revenue and scheduled passengers. They also have the most scheduled passenger-kilometres flown and scheduled passengers. American Airlines, along with regional partners, has an extensive domestic and international network that flies nearly 6,700 passengers per day to more than 350 destinations in over 50 countries.
American offers international long-haul services from its hubs at DFW, CLT and ORD, MIA. PHL. PHX. LAX.
Airlines frequently attend Routes events in Americas, Europe, and World to discuss Route Development and possible partners.
Dimensions 23x31 inches (58.4x78.7 cm).
This old pictorial fold map, dating from 1945, shows the routes of American Airlines as well as a few other airlines with which they shared domestic and international connections. Mexico, Cuba and the Bahamas are all international destinations. Twelve strip maps are featured on the verso, which show major hubs that were being built by the airline industry at time of publication.
This map contains a wealth information about the country and its industries, just as WWII was over. There are many decorative vignettes that fill the face of this map. They depict iconic destinations and industries, as well as lesser-known people and places. The map includes details on Canada's Royal Mounties, Native Americans of North America, wildlife and monuments, as well as topographic features. Spot heights and hachures show relief.
Condition: The folding map is in an A- condition. One corner has very minor damp staining and some folds have tiny separations.
