American Airlines Award Travel

American Airlines miles have been a favourite of mine for a while, and that's not just because my airport is an American Airlines hub. To determine award costs for both travel on its own metal as well as with its international airline partners, the AAdvantage program uses a mostly-region-based chart. This article will highlight the outstanding options available to AAdvantage members when they redeem miles.

How to Earn American Airlines AAdvantage Points Miles

AA's loyalty program, AAdvantage dates back to 1981. It is still the oldest airline loyalty program.

It's easy and free to enrol in American Airlines AAdvantage loyalty programs. First, go to .aa.com. Next, enter your basic information such as your address and birth date. This information should match the information on your government-issued ID to avoid any problems when you fly with your identification.

Once you have enrolled in the loyalty program AAdvantage, it is time to start earning miles.

Flying American Airlines

We'll first discuss how to earn AAdvantage points by flying. AA allows you to earn AAdvantage points based on your elite status, the price of your ticket (the base price), and less taxes and fees. For example, a Basic status member will receive 5 AAdvantage mile on their ticket, while a gold elite status holder will receive 7. The higher the elite status, however, the more miles you earn.

Earn up to 75,000 miles per flight

Status Miles

American Airline status includes one base-level tier, four elite tiers, and one public tier. Concierge Key is the fifth elite status tier available to American Airline passengers, but this is only by invitation.

  • Member - Earn 5 AAdvantage Miles per Dollar on American Airlines and selected One world flight
  • Gold - Earn 7 AAdvantage points per dollar on American Airlines flights, and select One world flight.
  • Platinum: Earn 8 miles for every dollar you spend on American Airlines and select One world flight.
  • Platinum Pro - Earn 9 AAdvantage Miles per Dollar on American Airlines and selected One world flight
  • Executive Platinum - Earn 11 AAdvantage points per dollar on American Airlines and selected One world flight

Your elite status will ultimately determine how many AAdvantage points you earn. For example, a basic member without elite status who buys a ticket in the main compartment (any of the fare codes within economy) for $141 can expect to earn 705 miles.

Book American Airlines Award Flight Tickets

Only American Airlines, Air Berlin and Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Finnair and Qantas Airways can be booked online.

It sounds annoying, right? This does not mean that you are restricted to the American award inventory, but you can choose from the many award flights on the American partner sites.

This is how you can build your American award itinerary.

  1. You can search for award tickets with American to see if there are any available for your destination at a reasonable price. Great! Book it. Otherwise, continue.
  2. Find out which airline partners fly to your destination. Kayak or similar fare aggregators are the best ways to find out which partner airline flies to your destination. The American Airlines partner list has a list of all available airlines.
  3. Search for award tickets starting at your home airport on the airline website. You can check the route map to see if the airline has any for that route.

  1. You can book a flight via the American website to connect from your airport with the other hubs of airlines.
  2. Go to the website of the partner airlines to find a flight that connects to the American flight.
  3. To book your American Airlines flight, call the American Airlines award booking number 800-882-8880

Airlines Awards

Technically, American Airlines awards can only be booked as one-way flights. Open-jaw itineraries, where you have a round trip that starts in one place and ends in another, such as Boston-Paris New York or Seattle-Paris, London-Seattle are possible and are not subject to restrictions.

You can keep the ticket for up to five days if you don't have enough points right now.

American Airlines Award Travel is in for Change

Due to its merger with US Airways, there will be some major changes in the loyalty program for Americans that could affect how frequent travellers enjoy it.

One world Explorer Awards, which were distance-based awards that are preferred by long-haul travellers, are no longer available. Also gone are stopovers in North America on international awards that allow people to book a one-way ticket anywhere else if they live in a gateway area. In line with other airlines, domestic layovers must be completed within 24 hours.

The lowest redemption level is the most fascinating change in the new award chart. You will now see more categories with the extremely low redemptions, which used to be called American's off-peak awards. For example, flying to Europe between October 15th and May 15 for 20,000 Miles instead of 30,000 each way. However, it is not clear how many seats will be made available for each flight in this category.
