American Airline Pet Policy

American Airlines has been flying animals for over 50 years. This means that even if your pet is just starting to fly, you can rest assured that they are in the best hands. American Airlines has a 24-hour help desk available for pet owners.

Although some rules for pet travel are similar across all airlines, the details can differ greatly from one airline to the other.

Where can you take your pet?

American currently allows pets and cats to travel as checked baggage, in-cabin or manifest cargo. This is only for US Military personnel.

In-cabin

American allows fully-trained service dog pilots to fly in-cabin free of charge, provided they meet the requirements.

American Airlines will allow you to bring one pet and a kennel on your flight for an additional charge. They must remain in their kennel underneath the seat in front for the entire duration of the flight. Hard-sided kennels must not exceed 19x13x9 inches for mainline flights and 16x12x8 inches for regional flights. Soft-sided kennels must not exceed 18x11x11 inches

Additional restrictions are applicable to the seat and aircraft you are in. Please check with the reservation desk for more information.

Checked pets (checked luggage)

American will not allow pets to be checked as baggage if they are members of the active-duty U.S. Military or U.S. State Department Foreign Service personnel who travel on official orders.

Although you can bring up to two pets, there is a limit on the number of pets that you can bring. Reservations must be contacted at least 48 hours before travel. You will need to check in at the ticket counter along with your official orders. You should allow additional time for check in (2-4 hours before departure). You will need to ensure that your pet meets all the requirements for entry.

All pets that are checked baggage or cargo for the airline must be in an IATA-compliant travel container.

You will need to confirm that your pet is allowed to travel on some aircrafts. American won't accept any brachycephalic (snub-nosed) breeds, such as Burmese, Persian or Exotic Shorthair cats. American Staffordshire Terrier and Boston Terrier, Affenpinscher, American Staffordshire Terrier, Boston Terrier and Bulldog (all Breeds), Bulldog (all Breeds), Cane Corso (Chow Chow), Bulldog (all Breeds), Bulldog (all Breeds), Cane Corso (all Breeds), Bulldog (all Types), Cane Corso (all Types), Cane Corso (all Kinds), Cane De Bordeaux, English Toy Spaniel), Japanese Chin, Shih Tzu, Staffordshire Bull Terrier or Tibetan Spaniel.

American will not allow pets to be checked in if the temperature is forecast to rise above 45 degrees Fahrenheit, or exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures prevent pets from traveling to or through Phoenix, Tucson or Las Vegas between May 1 and September 30, because they are too hot.

Manifest cargo

American's PETEmbark program allows pets and other animals to travel as cargo if they do not meet the requirements for checked baggage or in-cabin. Pets traveling as checked baggage or cargo travel in the same place beneath the plane in an area that is temperature-controlled, pressurized and oxygenated. The program has many of same breed restrictions and temperature restrictions as the previous. To fly, your pet must be at least 8 weeks old.

American Airlines' Pet Policy

American Airlines allows only cats and dogs to be carried on board. Other pets are not allowed. The American Airlines pet policy allows you to bring your cat or dog on most flights of up to 12 hours. This includes flights to and from the following destinations:

  • The 48 contiguous United States
  • Canada and the United States.
  • Alaska.
  • Mexico.
  • Puerto Rico.
  • St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

American Airlines charges $125 per one-way ticket for your pet to accompany you in the cabin. An additional $125 fee will be added to any one-way trip within the U.S. that includes a stopover of more than four hours. If you charge the fee on a card that offers airline fee credits, you might be able recover some or all of it.

American Airlines prohibits pets from flying in business or first class on these aircraft types.

  • 777-200.
  • 777-300.
  • 787-8.
  • 787-9.

It is important to book your pet in advance when making a reservation. American Airlines publishes the number and type of pets that are allowed on each flight, unlike the United Airlines pet policies. We know that American Airlines allows seven kennels per mainline flight (service animals do not count towards this limit).

American is currently allowing five kennels per flight, and one carrier in first-class for American Eagle flights. American has eliminated most change fees. However, you will have to reschedule your trip if your flight has reached its limit for in-cabin animals.

Pet Travel Fees

American Airlines will charge $125 per person for any pet other than a service animal. Pets 20 pounds and under or small animals that fit under the seat are exempt from paying additional fees.

American Airlines allows pets to fly with them

American Airlines only allows dogs and cats on its flights. Exotic animals are not allowed. The animal must not be older than 8 weeks (2 lbs).).

Service Animals

Flights allow service animals to be carried. If your service animal is friendly and well-behaved, you can bring it along on board. You must have a vest, harness or other sign that your pet is a service animal.

If they comply with these requirements, service animals can be allowed into the cabin for no additional charge.

  • It is important that the animal be trained to do specific tasks for its owner. For example, it must pull a wheelchair or alert its handler to a potential health crisis (such as low blood sugar).
  • The animal must not be too heavy or large (not more than 20 lbs) and must fit comfortably under your seat during taxi and take-off. During flight, the animal must remain on top of your seat and move freely around the cabin.
  • You shouldn't make excessive noises or disturb others by barking or making other disruptive sounds that could disrupt the enjoyment of passengers on American Airlines flights shorter than 8 hours.

What containers are permitted?

American Airlines allows pets to fly with them, but they will need to be transported in a suitable carrier.

  • It should be able to fit under your seat or in the overhead bin. It must be placed under your seat for landing and take-off. If it is in the overhead bin, it must remain there throughout flight.
  • It should be water-proofed and easy to clean. You'll be able, in the event of an emergency (your dog gets sick or has an accident), to quickly and easily take care of it without worrying about making a mess.
  • This helps to prevent infection. Plastic carriers are great because they can be easily cleaned up after spills and messes have been cleaned up. Soft-sided carriers made of nylon or other material can be used at home. They are also easier to clean. You should make sure that pets are not exposed to the material for too long. Otherwise, they could get sick!
  • Once the container is full, it must have enough space inside for dogs/cats to stand upright.

When is it best to make a reservation?

It is best to book your pet's place at least 24 hours in advance so that you don't get any surprises. You may have to pay an additional fee if you book within the last 24 hours of your flight. This depends on when you booked it. More information can be found on our website. If you do not want to pay the fee but still want your pet to be with you at the airport, it is best to make arrangements as soon as possible.

You can save time and money by knowing what the rules are before you fly.

It is important to be familiar with the airline's policies regarding pets if you are planning on traveling with one. It is important to ensure that your pet is permitted onboard and has all the necessary paperwork. Do your research before you fly to ensure that everything runs smoothly when you check in with your furry friend(s).

  • Check with your airline to find out what their policy is. Most airlines allow pets on board most flights. However, there are exceptions. Delta allows pets on domestic flights, but not international. Cats and dogs are allowed only for domestic flights. Delta does not allow pets to travel with them if they do not offer a special service package for these types of animals.
  • Find out what your pet's policy says: Before you fly with them, make sure to find out whether there are weight restrictions. Some airlines have a minimum of 10 pounds for pets while others don't.
  • Be aware of their destination rules: Depending on your destination, you might need to have special documents for yourself or the animal.

American Airlines considers your pet carrier to be a carry-on. If you are bringing a pet along, you will only be allowed one personal item. All other bags must be checked and the appropriate fees will be applied.
